Secret life of birds

February 16, 2021

No matter how many times he taught the birds and the bees class, it was never apparent to Professor Whoo whether the Barn Owls understood.

Birds and the bees

Day 16 of 28 Feathered Friends, Birds & the bees is today’s prompt. Another entry in the secret life of birds. Day 17 of The 100 Day Project.

Onward.

A wing and a prayer

February 15, 2021

Sometimes that’s all you have to go on

A wing and a prayer

This one was rushed and I’m not crazy about how sloppy it is appears to me.

I didn’t want to create anything today. My aunt fell and broke her hip yesterday when she went out on the icy driveway. She takes care of my mom, who’s in poor health, who is now alone. An hour and 15 travel time away. And we have an ice storm.

Mom insists she’s fine and will be able to take care of my aunt when she returns home after surgery.

Does anyone else see the folly in this plan?

So here I sit at the proverbial drawing board. Art does not seem in the least bit important right now. Way down on the list.

But really, what else am I going to do? Go find a team of sled dogs and mush my way to their house? Risk the trip in the car? Sit here and worry?

Today’s prompt is perfectly timed because I can wing it and I can pray. And create some art. Write a little. So that’s what I did. Am doing.

Stay safe out there and stay inside, if you’re in this ice storm.

True love (birds)

February 14, 2021

True love

Even in her fuzzy slippers and curlers in her feathers, Romeo adored Clementine.

And Clementine, the darling that she is, cherished Romeo even in his tighty whities.

Queue Elton John’s “Your Song” and the best line: “How wonderful life is while you’re in the world.”

Lovebirds do it right. Happy Valentine’s Day.

Game bird game night goes awry

February 13, 2021

Milton is no longer trusted with the remote control

Rare bird

Milton the Mallard instantly regretted his choice of Top Chef on the Food Network for background noise during Game Bird Game Night.

According to some, duck tastes best served as a “rare bird” which is the prompt for Day 13 of the 28 Feathered Friends art challenge.

Bon appétit!

100 points to anyone who can correctly guess the card game being played. Bonus 100 points to anyone who knows who invented the game. And a bonus bonus of 200 points if you can tell me what it was named after—a type of what?

Truth revealed about Hummingbird migration

February 12, 2021

How they really know

Recently leaked footage of a secret Migration Routes Strategy meeting held on Zoom by leaders in the Hummingbird community, finally reveal how they know exactly where to travel.

Migration Strategy Zoom Meeting

Studies have suggested hummingbirds use Earth’s magnetic field, memory, landmarks, or the sun as a compass. Clearly this new evidence suggests they’re technologically savvy and far more advanced than previously thought.

When asked about how they like the Zoom meetings, Violet commented, “It’s hard to keep their attention. They’re always drinking and eating. Although Calliope and Ruby tend to pay the best attention and then there’s Anna, who really doesn’t need to attend, but she shows up anyway.”

She went on to say, “We just signed up at Twitter (@BexBirds) but we haven’t tweeted anything yet, which is odd, because we’re birds.”

Violet explained this year’s migration has already begun and her first class departed for the southern US about a week ago, mostly males.

“With 2,000 to 4,000 miles (3218 to 6437 km) to travel at about 23 miles a day (37 km), we have a long journey ahead to reach our summer homes in Canada and the US,” she said.

“And none of us will be riding on the backs of Geese for the migration,” she emphasized. “We travel alone and ship our electronics via UPS.”

Violet ended the interview by flying away at about 30 mph (48 kph).

That’s all for now, except — 100 points to anyone who can say why Anna didn’t need to attend the Zoom meeting on Migration Routes Strategy.

Back to you.
