April’s full pink super moon occurred on a school night and with the hour distance between me and my granddaughter, we had to compromise for our Walk When the Moon is Full adventure.
Enter FaceTime and a few screenshots.
We spoke about seeing the same moon even though we’re far apart. I walked on our road and she walked around her yard. I showed her the barge on the river and she showed me her tree.
She figured out how to turn the device around to show the moon over her shoulder and I figured out how to take a screen shot without my finger over the lens.
We talked about East and West, why the April moon is called a pink one, and I may have used the words ‘perigee’ and super moon.
I don’t know if any of it sunk in and it’s okay if it didn’t. As long as she felt the connection and the love, that’s all that matters.
Somewhere out there
beneath the pale moonlight,
someone’s thinking of me
and loving me tonight.
And even though I know how
very far apart we are,
it helps to think we might be
wishing on the same bright star.
Song by James Ingram & Linda Ronstadt
March’s walk (when the moon is full) included my granddaughter, her friend and a trek on a dark, rural road. The moonlight was exceptionally bright on this journey, the air crisp and cool in the low 60s (F).
As we walked, the girls became journalists and reported the event in real time speaking into their flashlight microphones.
Then they were animal trackers as we spotted a bunny’s glowing eyes in the brush and they identified its footprints in the soft earth.
Then detectives, investigating the case of the missing rabbit. They sleuthed and deduced.
They became inspectors as they examined a ditch pond for frog eggs.
Then scientists as we discussed tadpoles and how they turn into frogs.
They practiced comforting skills when noises came from the woods and the unknown became scary.
And they experienced how the power of singing can alleviate fear. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and Mary Poppins ushered us home into the safe circle of porch lights.
Some have asked why walk when the moon is full.
This is why.
“The moon is a loyal companion.
It never leaves. It’s always there, watching, steadfast, knowing us in our light and dark moments, changing forever just as we do.
Every day it’s a different version of itself. Sometimes weak and wan, sometimes strong and full of light. The moon understands what it means to be human.
Uncertain. Alone. Cratered by imperfections.”
― Tahereh Mafi, Shatter Me
“But even when the moon looks like it’s waning…it’s actually never changing shape. Don’t ever forget that.”
― Ai Yazawa, Nana, Vol. 14
